Legend has it that a group of Apache warriors leapt from a mountain to avoid a surrender to the enemy and the tears of the grief stricken Apache women turned to stones.  It is thought by some to be a protective stone.  Obsidian is actually volcanic glass that is formed when the heated lava cools so rapidly that crystals have no time to form.
